RapidFor™ Rota/Adeno + Norovirus + Astrovirus Antigen Combo Test
The RapidFor™ Rota/Adeno +Norovirus + Astrovirus Antigen Rapid Test is a rapid immunochromatographic test for the qualitative detection of Adenovirus, Rotavirus, Norovirus and Astrovirus antigens in stool samples.
Acute diarrhoeal diseases are a major cause of morbidity in young children worldwide and are also responsible for high mortality rates in developing countries. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in children, followed by enteric adenoviruses (mainly types 40 and 41). Both viruses can cause infections all year round, especially in children under two years of age, but also in other age groups. Adenoviruses are responsible for around 4-15% of hospitalisations with viral gastroenteritis. Rapid and reliable diagnosis is crucial for patient management, as other methods such as electron microscopy or nucleic acid hybridisation are costly and labour-intensive.
Rotavirus infections occur mainly in the winter months and can lead to severe cases in risk groups such as infants, the elderly and immunocompromised patients. Up to 50% of stool samples tested positive for rotavirus in hospitals. As the viruses are difficult to cultivate, detection is preferably carried out by antigen detection in the stool.
Noroviruses are the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, including foodborne outbreaks, in the United States. Noroviruses belong to the Caliciviridae family and can be divided into five genogroups (GI to GV), which are further differentiated into at least 34 genotypes. Genotypes GI, GII and GIV infect humans and cause gastroenteritis, while GIII and GV usually infect animals.
The symptoms of astrovirus infection are mild and typically include watery diarrhoea that lasts for 2-3 days, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite and abdominal pain. Vomiting is less common with astrovirus infection than with rotavirus or calicivirus infections, and astrovirus infections also have a longer incubation period. Based on data from studies with adult volunteers and outbreaks of gastroenteritis in nurseries, the average incubation period for astrovirus infections was calculated to be 4.5 days.
