RapidFor™ Rota/Adeno Antigen Combo Test
The RapidFor™ Rota/Adeno Antigen Rapid Test is a rapid immunochromatographic test for the qualitative detection of adenovirus and rotavirus antigens in stool samples. The test serves as a diagnostic aid in the detection of infections with adenoviruses or rotaviruses, which are often the cause of acute diarrhoea in children.
Acute diarrhoeal diseases are a major cause of morbidity in young children worldwide and are also responsible for high mortality rates in developing countries. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in children, followed by enteric adenoviruses (mainly types 40 and 41). Both viruses can cause infections all year round, especially in children under two years of age, but also in other age groups. Adenoviruses are responsible for around 4-15% of hospitalisations with viral gastroenteritis. Rapid and reliable diagnosis is crucial for patient management, as other methods such as electron microscopy or nucleic acid hybridisation are costly and labour-intensive.
Rotavirus infections occur mainly in the winter months and can lead to severe cases in risk groups such as infants, the elderly and immunocompromised patients. Up to 50% of stool samples tested positive for rotavirus in hospitals. As the viruses are difficult to cultivate, detection is preferably carried out by antigen detection in the stool.
